Reciprocal Teaching at Bruce Randolph School

The design team at Bruce Randolph School has used Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles to develop their practice with Reciprocal Teaching. The team has implemented multiple rounds of trying the protocol in their classrooms, collecting data, and then debriefing together to share what they’ve learned and refine the protocol based on their learning. In this video, Bruce Randolph's Facilitation Lead, Caitlin Osugi, shares how the team has prioritized time to collaborate and learning from their students to improve their practice. Bruce Randolph students also share how Reciprocal Teaching allows them to build connections with other students while deepening their mastery of mathematics.

What is Reciprocal Teaching? Reciprocal Teaching is an instructional strategy in which students teach each other, building communication skills, use of academic vocabulary, and demonstrating deep understanding of mathematical concepts in the process. Students begin by solving a mathematical problem, then they explain their solution to a partner who completes the problem following their partner’s steps. Reciprocal Teaching was first designed to improve reading comprehension, but has been adapted for other content areas, including mathematics.
